'Queen' leads BAFTA contest

'Babel,' 'Departed,' 'Sunshine' make strong bids

By ADAM DAWTREY

LONDON — "The Queen" leads the nominations for this year's British Academy Film Awards, but that's the most predictable aspect of a list that honors an unexpectedly rich and varied blend of British, American and international talent.

"The Queen," with 10 nods, is competing for best film against "Babel" (seven), "The Departed" (six), "Little Miss Sunshine" (six) and "The Last King of Scotland" (five).

Other heavily nominated pics include "Casino Royale" (nine), "Pan's Labyrinth" (eight) and "United 93" (six). "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" received five apiece.

An eclectic best actor race pitches Daniel Craig's impersonation of James Bond in "Casino Royale" against Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland," Leonardo DiCaprio's undercover cop in "The Departed," Richard Griffiths as a schoolmaster in "The History Boys" and Peter O'Toole's decrepit actor in "Venus."

The best actress list has a more predictable air, with hometown favorites Helen Mirren ("The Queen"), Judi Dench ("Notes on a Scandal") and Kate Winslet ("Little Children") running against Penelope Cruz ("Volver") and Meryl Streep ("The Devil Wears Prada").

The Alexander Korda Award for best British film is a contest between "Casino Royale," "The Queen," "Notes on a Scandal," "The Last King of Scotland" and "United 93."

Paul Greengrass, director of "United 93," is also in the running for the David Lean Award for achievement in direction, against Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu ("Babel"), Martin Scorsese ("The Departed"), Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris ("Little Miss Sunshine") and Stephen Frears ("The Queen").

The Carl Foreman Award for special achievement by a debut Brit filmmaker also threw up some surprises, with the hotly-tipped directors Andrea Arnold ("Red Road") and Paul Andrew Williams ("London to Brighton") nominated alongside the less familiar names of director Julian Gilbey ("Rollin' with the Nines"), doc director Gary Tarn ("Black Sun") and producer Christine Langan ("Pierrepoint").

That was actually one of two nominations for Langan, who also got a nod in the best film category as the producer of "The Queen."

The nominees for non-English-language film are "Apocalypto," "Black Book," "Pan's Labyrinth," "Volver" and, in another surprise, the Bollywood pic "Rang de Basanti."

BAFTA's new animated film category is a contest between "Cars," "Happy Feet" and "Flushed Away."

For supporting actor, the nominees are Alan Arkin ("Little Miss Sunshine"), James McAvoy ("The Last King of Scotland"), Jack Nicholson ("The Departed"), Leslie Phillips ("Venus) and Michael Sheen ("The Queen").

The supporting actress section includes Emily Blunt ("The Devil Wears Prada"), Abigail Breslin and Toni Colette (both from "Little Miss Sunshine"), Frances de la Tour ("The History Boys") and Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls").

That was one of only two nominations (the other being music) in a disappointing showing for "Dreamgirls." Other pics that might have hoped to do better include "Volver" (two nods) and "Children of Men" (three).

"Marie Antoinette" took three nods in the craft categories, while "Superman Returns" picked up one for visual effects.

Pics that figured on BAFTA's longlists but failed to make it through to the nominations include "Bobby," "Miss Potter," "Borat," "Flags of our Fathers," "The Wind That Shakes the Barley," "Infamous," "Breaking and Entering" and "Blood Diamond."

This year's awards will be held on Feb. 11 at the Royal Opera House in London.

Bond fan Jonathan Ross to host BAFTA awards, Daniel Craig nominated

English television personality Jonathan Ross is to host this year's British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) ceremony Feb 11. He had been widely tipped to take over the role from previous host Stephen Fry.

Said David Parfitt, chairman of the BAFTA Film Committee: 'We are delighted that Jonathan Ross will be our master of ceremonies in the elegant surroundings of the Royal Opera House for what promises to be an outstanding celebration of cinema.'

Some of the celebrities who have confirmed their presence at the show include Kate Winslet, Forest Whittaker, Sienna Miller and Penélope Cruz. New Bond star Daniel Craig will also be present at the ceremony, said ananova.com.

Craig is nominated in the best actor category for 'Casino Royale' - the first time in the event's history that an actor has been nominated for playing James Bond.

The event will be aired on BBC TV.

Bafta Party Axed Over Burberry Demo Fear.

3rd February 2007 14:01:01

Bafta Party Axed Over Burberry Demo Fear.

BAFTA nominees DANIEL CRAIG and DAME HELEN MIRREN will be missing out on a pre-ceremony party because the British Academy of Film and Television Art bash has lost its main sponsor.

Fashion giant Burberry dropped out of next week's (10FEB07) lavish affair amid fears protesters would use the occasion to demonstrate against the closure of one of its UK factories.

The British clothes house plans to move some production to China, causing the loss of 300 jobs in south Wales.

In the absence of Burberry's funding, BAFTA was forced to cancel the celebration for nominees, due to be held at the National History Museum, London.

"The Queen" takes on Bond at BAFTA

LONDON (Reuters) - James Bond takes on Her Majesty at the British film awards on Sunday, with "Casino Royale" up for nine BAFTA awards, just one behind frontrunner "The Queen".

Stephen Frears is on the Best Director shortlist for "The Queen", and Helen Mirren, an Oscar favourite in the leading role, is contending for Best Actress for her portrayal of a confused monarch at the time of Princess Diana's death in 1997.

Daniel Craig, the controversial choice to replace Pierce Brosnan as superspy James Bond in "Casino Royale", has been vindicated with a nomination for Best Actor.

"'Casino Royale' has got nine nominations, including Best Actor for Daniel Craig, which is really one in the eye for all those people who said he wasn't the right person for the job," film critic Mark Kermode told the BBC when the award contenders were revealed last month.

Craig is up against Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Departed", Richard Griffiths in "The History Boys", Peter O'Toole in "Venus" and Forest Whitaker in "The Last King of Scotland", where he portrays the late Ugandan dictator Idi Amin.

Bookmaker William Hill made Whitaker the favourite, followed by O'Toole, DiCaprio and then Craig.

Griffiths is gracious about his outsider status.

"I am naturally thrilled to bits, as I have never been nominated for a movie award before," he said. "However, I will be astonished, dismayed and disappointed if it isn't awarded to Peter O'Toole."

William Hill also predicted "The Queen" would walk off with the Best Film statuette, and Mirren with a Best Actress award.

She is competing with Judi Dench, nominated for her role in the school sex drama "Notes on a Scandal", Penelope Cruz in "Volver", Meryl Streep in the fashion comedy "The Devil Wears Prada" and Kate Winslet in "Little Children".

"I'll be perfectly happy when I drop off the map as well," Mirren said of her new-found international fame.

"Win or lose, the bubble bursts and you're back to the nitty-gritty of working," the 61-year-old told Reuters by telephone from the United States last month.

"I'm honestly at my happiest in a cold rehearsal room with my polystyrene cup of tea."

OSCAR BAROMETER?

In 2001, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts' annual awards were moved to before the Oscars, helping them to attract Hollywood stars hoping to generate last-minute buzz.

But the BAFTAs, with a bias towards British films, have only a patchy record of predicting who will pick up Academy Awards.

In the Best Film category, "The Queen" is joined by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Babel", "The Departed", directed by Martin Scorsese, "The Last King of Scotland" and the low-budget beauty pageant comedy "Little Miss Sunshine".

In the race to be Best Director, Frears takes on Scorsese, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris ("Little Miss Sunshine"), Inarritu, and Paul Greengrass for his fact-based September 11 drama "United 93".

Best Supporting Actor nominations went to Alan Arkin ("Little Miss Sunshine"), James McAvoy ("The Last King of Scotland", Jack Nicholson ("The Departed"), Leslie Phillips ("Venus") and Michael Sheen ("The Queen").

Up for Best Supporting Actress are Emily Blunt ("The Devil Wears Prada"), Abigail Breslin and Toni Collette ("Little Miss Sunshine"), Frances de la Tour ("The History Boys") and Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls").

"Pan's Labyrinth", a fantasy set just after the end of the Spanish Civil War, garnered eight BAFTA nominations, and "Babel", starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, gained seven.

Click HereJudi Dench Can Pull Off Bafta Surprise

Helen Mirren is the 1/12 red hot favourite to win the Best Actress BAFTA to add to her already bursting trophy cabinet, but there has been a late surge of bets for Judi Dench at 10/1 as punters sniff a possible upset and bet on the value.

"Helen Mirren looks certain to win an Oscar for her portrayal of the Queen and a number of shrewd punters are backing Judi Dench to be awarded a BAFTA as a consolation for not winning the Oscar," said William Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams.

The Queen is 15/8 second favourite to win the Best Film award, for which Departed is the even money favourite.

The Best Actor award looks destined to go to Forest Whitaker who is the 2/7 favourite but again the money suggests that Peter O'Toole could provide an upset at 5/2.

The new Bond Daniel Craig is totally friendless in the betting and for once will probably have to settle for second best. William Hill are offering a number of Daniel Craig specials, which include: 6/1 that he arrives with two dates; 10/1 that Craig dyes his hair black for the award ceremony, 25/1 that he abseils onto the red carpet and 50/1 that Daniel Craig arrives with a White Cat called Blofeld.

William Hill expect Sacha Baron Cohen to turn up as himself and offer 5/1 he appears as 'Borat'.
