Renard, the Anarchist
The World Is Not Enough.

Renard was trained by the KGB as an assassin, but was let go because of his mental instability. With the cessation of the Cold War, the political climate changes, and he becomes a terrorist. During a mission to thwart one of Renard's plots, MI6 agent 009 tracked him down and shot him in the head. Renard survived the attack, but the bullet could not be removed from his head, and was steadily working its way through his brain toward the cerebral cortex. As it moved, it steadily deprived Renard of his ability to taste, smell, and, most notably, feel. At some indeterminate time, the bullet would reach his cerebral cortex and kill him, but he would continue to function, and indeed grow stronger, until his death, as his inability to feel pain allowed him to drive himself far beyond ordinary physical limits. His unique physical prowess is demonstrated in a grisly scene where he handles scalding pieces of volcanic rock in his hand without so much as flinching.

He kidnapped Elektra King, a billionaire heiress, and held her for ransom, which her father refused to pay. Elektra, who was suffering from Stockholm syndrome and so believed herself to be in love with Renard, was infuriated and joined forces with him, mutilating her own ear so he could send a piece of it to her family as a warning. She then "escaped" and remained her former captor's lover in secret.

Ten years later, he joined forces with Elektra in a scheme to take control of the world's oil market. In a bold move, they launched an attack on MI6 (a first for the series), which kills Elektra's father, who was visiting the facility. Originally, it is thought their target was her family oil pipeline, but it is later revealed that they damaged the pipeline to cover their real target: all oil supplies except for those belonging to the King family. Renard hijacked a Russian nuclear submarine and intended to introduce weapons-grade plutonium into the sub's nuclear reactor, causing a nuclear meltdown. This would happen in the Bosporus at Istanbul; the ensuing "accident" would contaminate the city and the Bosporus for decades, preventing any shipping from the Black Sea — including shipments of Caspian Sea oil via all existing pipelines except for the King pipeline, which terminated on Turkey's Mediterranean coast.

They took M hostage and captured Bond, whose own feelings for Elektra clouded his judgment. After forcing himself to kill Elektra, Bond confronted Renard in the hijacked sub. Just as the reactor was about to go critical due to Renard's plutonium-laced fuel rod, Bond rigged the reactor so that the rod was instead shot out of the core and into Renard's body, killing him and also stopping the reaction.

Sir Gustav Graves
Die Another Day (2002)

Affiliation - North Korea
Self-employed
Current status - Deceased
Portrayed by - Toby Stephens (as Graves)
                               - Will Yun Lee (as Moon)

Biography

Graves was born Tan-Sun Moon, son of General Moon. When first seen, he is a Colonel in the Korean People's Army. He studied at Oxford and Harvard and was intended to become a bridge between the West and the East. Instead, he became a weapons smuggler, exchanging weapons for conflict diamonds from Sierra Leone, intent on the invasion and conquest of South Korea. MI6 became aware of his activities, however, and dispatched three agents, including James Bond, to shut him down. The mission was a success, and Moon was believed to have died when his hovercraft fell off a cliff.

Moon survived, however, and fled to Cuba, where he underwent DNA replacement therapy to alter his appearance. He then reinvented himself as Gustav Graves, a billionaire adventurer who worked in diamond mines in Argentina and later discovered a great mine of diamonds in Iceland — in reality the conflict diamonds he had been dealing with originally. He assumed a new personality modeled on James Bond: sophisticated, sarcastic and, by Graves' own admission, arrogant. With his new wealth, he built the Icarus, a huge articifial satellite capable of harnessing solar energy and focusing it on any part of the world he wished.

Graves' official reasons for the construction of Icarus were ending weather inconvenience and poverty and helping the harvests. His real reasons were more sinister, however; he was still intent on conquest of South Korea, and was planning to use Icarus to create a pathway in the mined demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, then use Icarus to destroy any ballistic missiles or nuclear warheads lauched against North Korea, so that the North Koreans could cross the DMZ and easily invade South Korea and the next step, Japan. Graves had the controls for Icarus built into a large metal suit with an additional electroshock weapon for self-defence.

When Graves put his plan into action, he took off in an Antonov An-124 with his father, and unbeknownst to him, James Bond, onboard to watch the scene. When General Moon tried to stop the plan, Graves killed his own father. Bond then attempted to kill Graves, but his shot missed and broke a window in the plane, sending all other passengers except himself and Graves in the room flying out. The two fought until Bond used Graves' parachute and the electroshock function of his suit to forcibly eject him, and Graves was sucked into the blades of the Antonov's jet engine, killing him and destroying his suit, rendering the Icarus harmless.

Last words: "Time to face destiny", to which Bond retorted: "Time to face gravity".

Trivia

Graves is the only Bond villain to be portrayed by two different actors in the same film.

Graves' character is similar to, and clearly inspired by, billionaire adventurer Sir Richard Branson, and he shares the Virgin Airways' owner's penchant for PR stunts. For example, he arrives at Buckingham Palace to accept his knighthood by parachute, and is fond of branding everything with his trademark G logo, in a similar way to Branson's Virgin branding. Branson himself appears in a cameo role in the 2006 version of Casino Royale.

Le Chiffre
Casino Royale (2006)

Le Chiffre is the main villain of the official 2006 James Bond film, Casino Royale, portrayed by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. He employs a platinum, benzedrine inhaler; not for any form of medication, but because benzedrine is a type of amphetamine. He suffers from Haemolacria, which causes him to cry blood. A banker for various terrorists and uses Alex Dimitrios, a government contractor, as a middle-man for many of his jobs. Believed by MI6 to be born in Albania, Le Chiffre is a mathematical genius and a chess prodigy. His mathematical abilities enable him to earn large sums of money on games of chance and probabilities, and he likes to show off by playing poker.

Scheme

Le Chiffre works with a man known as Mr. White, who is a representative of an unnamed terrorist organisation. White introduces Steven Obanno, a feared leader of the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda to Le Chiffre, and arranges to bank US$101,260,000 for Obanno. Le Chiffre invests the money in an aircraft manufacturer's stock and plans to short the stock by ordering the destruction of the company's new prototype airliner, set to make its first flight out of Miami International Airport. Bond intervenes and foils the plan, costing Le Chiffre the entire investment.

In order to win the money back for Obanno, Le Chiffre sets up and enters a high stakes Texas hold 'em tournament in Montenegro at the Casino Royale in an attempt to recoup the loss before Obanno learns that his money has been misappropriated. Bond is sent to make sure that Le Chiffre does not win back the money. The reasoning is to force Le Chiffre to turn to MI6 for protection, in exchange for information on his creditors and employers.

During the tournament, an enraged Obanno and one of his henchmen break into Le Chiffre's hotel room and threaten him and his girlfriend, Valenka. After administering a savage beating, the men give him one last chance to win their money back. However, as they leave the room, the henchman spots Bond; in the subsequent brawl, 007 kills both Obanno and his henchman.

Prevention

After a tense tournament, Le Chiffre loses a key hand and the tournament to Bond's straight flush. Enraged by his loss, he kidnaps Vesper Lynd forcing Bond to give chase, and Bond is led straight into his trap. Le Chiffre leaves Vesper, bound at the feet and hands, in the middle of the road, and Bond is forced to swerve and he subsequently crashes his car. When Bond regains consciousness he is stripped and tied to a chair. Le Chiffre proceeds to torture Bond by smashing a thick knotted rope upwards into his testicles, trying to extort the password that will enable Le Chiffre to collect the tournament winnings. When Bond refuses to give in, Le Chiffre brandishes a knife and threatens to castrate him. Just then, however, Mr. White suddenly enters the room and executes Le Chiffre by shooting him in the forehead for losing the tournament and the money entrusted to him.
